A timeless delight at Eat Me

(review May 2019)

Since as long as I live in Bangkok, one of the perennial favorites among food enthusiasts was Eat Me, a restaurant that has been serving culinary delights since 1998, helmed by the talented Head Chef Tim Butler. Tucked away on a charming lane, a mere 20 meters from Convent Road, this establishment exudes a welcoming aura from the moment you step inside. The outdoor seating area, adorned with lush greenery, creates a tranquil haven amidst the bustling city center, making it a rare sanctuary in the heart of Bangkok.

Eat Me’s menu boasts a fusion of inventive yet unpretentious cuisine, drawing inspiration from diverse culinary influences worldwide, including American, Spanish, Italian, and Asian flavors. Divided into three categories—Fish & Seafood, Vegetables, and Meat & Poultry—the menu caters to all palates. Even vegetarians and vegans can revel in a social night out, indulging in delectable dishes paired with a fine selection of wines.

The Ambiance: Modern, Urban, and Inviting

The restaurant’s interior exudes a modern, urban charm that evokes the cosmopolitan atmosphere of New York City. It strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and elegance, instantly putting guests at ease in a cozy and comfortable setting.

A Gastronomic Journey: Small Bites with Big Flavors

Our culinary adventure began with a selection of appetizers for sharing. The pan-seared scallops with lobster bisque and chorizo, the white asparagus and caviar, the spicy wagyu tartare, and the shima aji tartare all delighted our taste buds. Among them, the shima aji tartare stood out—a delicate and refreshing dish, particularly enjoyable during the summer months.

The Main Event: A Symphony of Flavors

For the main course, I opted for the charred hamachi collar with sea urchin butter, accompanied by a side of green asparagus. The hamachi was impeccably prepared and served, while the addition of the sea urchin butter elevated this seemingly simple fish dish into a remarkable and sophisticated creation.

A Sweet Finale: Desserts with a Twist

As a self-proclaimed sweet tooth, I always gravitate towards the dessert menu when selecting a restaurant. While Asian desserts can sometimes fall short of my expectations as a French connoisseur, Eat Me managed to offer classic desserts with an intriguing Asian twist.

Their Pavlova, a personal favorite, usually entices me with its perfect balance of sweet and sour, crispy and creamy notes. However, the Pavlova at Eat Me failed to impress. The dessert lacked balance, with the sweetness overpowering the intended sour taste—a definite disappointment. On a brighter note, their flourless chocolate cake proved to be divine and quickly became my top choice.

Another standout dessert was the lemongrass crème brûlée, where the infusion of lemongrass imparted a delightful Thai twist to this beloved French classic.
