Dinner Review – December 5th
If you’re looking for a place where sunsets merge with stellar Spanish cuisine, Kipo Restaurant & Bar is calling your name. Perched on the second floor of Fira, Phuket’s first seaview club, this new addition in the south brings Spanish food with an exciting international twist.
The decor? Pure coastal charm. Think Mediterranean chic with a Greek soul—earthy ceramic pots, rustic vases, blond wooden tables, and ultra-comfy chairs that feel as if they’re hugging you. It’s a setting that effortlessly blends sophistication with relaxation, perfectly framing the endless sapphire expanse of the Andaman Sea. Come at sunset for a spectacular light show, or stay late to experience the glittering “green stars” of fishing boats on the horizon. Add to this the DJ spinning Latin-infused electro beats, and you’ve got the perfect ambiance—whether you’re planning a romantic date or a carefree night out with your girlfriends gang, laughter echoing through the room as cocktails flow.
I’ve visited twice within a week (yes, twice—it’s that good) and walked away smitten both times. Chef Ramon Verano, whose culinary passport includes stints in London, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Bali, brings a depth to his Spanish-rooted cuisine that feels both elevated and familiar. The bar, helmed by Guillerme Valdivieso—fresh from Shanghai—perfectly complements the menu with well-crafted drinks that transport you straight to Barcelona.
While Bangkok flaunts Embassy Room – Catalan Cuisine at the Park Hyatt with Chef Farran Tadeo, Phuket is carving its own niche. Spanish cuisine is finally making waves here, from La Salada in Rawai to La Cava up to Cherngtalay. There’s also Vamos at The Society in Cherngtalay, though it left me a bit underwhelmed. And then there’s Kipo—a standout in every sense, where bold flavors and masterful execution set a new benchmark for Spanish dining on the island.
MEET THE TEAM
Kipo and Fira share the same visionary owners behind Cannelle Bakery & Co., the beloved bakery and café that has captured the hearts of southern Phuket locals. If you’re a loyal follower, you already know Cannelle is my go-to spot for croissant cravings whenever I head south. Now, with Kipo, I have yet another reason to make the trip to this stunning corner of the island. Nestled right next to Fira, you’ll also find Sundesk, a dreamy spot to catch the sunset over Kata Noi—a perfect prelude to an unforgettable evening at Kipo.
At the helm of the kitchen is the immensely talented Chef Ramon Verano, whose globe-trotting culinary career has taken him from London to Tokyo, Bali, and Shanghai. His dishes marry bold Spanish flavors with international influences, creating a menu that’s both exciting and comforting. Over at the bar, Guillerme Valdivieso, fresh from Shanghai, ensures every sip is expertly crafted, enhancing the dining experience with his skillful touch.
Phuket food enthusiasts will also notice a few familiar faces from renowned establishments like Rosewood Phuket, Tree O’Clock, and The Fool Speakeasy. That sense of familiarity, combined with warm service and an attention to detail, creates an atmosphere that feels both special and welcoming.
Now, let’s talk about the food—because at Kipo, the dishes don’t just wow—they make you pause mid-bite, eyes wide, and consider whether you’ve just had a life-altering moment.
THE FOOD
BITES: START WITH A BANG
Crispy Crab Nests (THB 120)
These delicate morsels are pure joy—sweet, tender crab meat tucked into petite, crunchy taco shells. Light, crispy, and bursting with flavor, they’re the perfect bite to kick things off.
Kipo Signature Scallops (THB 230)
This dish is a showstopper and worth every bit of the journey to Kipo. Plump Hokkaido scallops are seared to golden perfection, achieving a delightful contrast between the caramelized exterior and the luscious, raw translucence at the center. The tangy pineapple kimchi is the unexpected star here, cutting through the richness with just the right amount of zing. The result? A sweet-umami harmony so exquisite it might just have you clutching the table for support. This one is an absolute must-try.
Riviera Donuts (THB 180)
These aren’t your carnival donuts. We’re talking delicate, flaky pastry filled with slow-braised, herb-infused beef cheeks. Savory, rich, and oh-so-satisfying. Pro tip: Enjoy them fresh out of the kitchen to savor their full crispy glory. Unfortunately, we made the rookie mistake of letting them sit too long, so they lost some of their appeal by the time we dug in. Don’t repeat my error—these are best enjoyed piping hot.
Chicken Parfait (THB 50)
A single decadent bite that’s all about texture and layers. Silky-smooth chicken parfait meets sweet, caramelized onions, all drizzled with a luscious red wine reduction. Served with toasted brioche, it’s luxurious, rich, and worth savoring slowly.
Classic Croquetas Jamon (THB 300) & Wild Mushroom (THB 240)
Golden and crispy on the outside with a luscious, creamy béchamel filling, these croquetas are a textbook example of Spanish comfort food. While they’re undeniably well-executed, they didn’t quite leave a lasting impression—perhaps overshadowed by the standout scallops that had already set the bar sky-high. A solid choice, but not the dish that will steal the spotlight.
TAPAS & SMALL PLATES: SHARE, SAVOR, REPEAT
Kipo’s Bread & Butter (THB 170)
Freshly baked sourdough with artisanal butters. Think tangy, creamy spreads that melt into the warm, crusty bread. Here’s a tip: save a slice (or three) to mop up the sauces from the other dishes. Trust me—you’ll want every drop.
Beef Tartare (THB 400)
Wagyu beef tartare, hand-cut to a perfect, silky consistency and seasoned with achiote oil for a subtle smokiness. The homemade pickles add just enough bite. The crispy nori chip? Pure genius. It’s the perfect vehicle to scoop it up. Elegant, flavorful, and so satisfying.
Char-Grilled Octopus (THB 460)
Tender, smoky, and perfectly paired with a creamy Russian salad. The balance of smokiness and lightness makes this dish shine—simple yet flawlessly executed.
Patatas Bravas (THB 200)
Kipo’s take features thinly sliced, layered potatoes that are crispy on the outside and tender inside, stacked with a spicy sauce and creamy aioli. While visually stunning, I found them slightly oily and missing the comfort-food heartiness I usually expect from patatas bravas.
MAINS: THE SHOWSTOPPERS
Picanha (THB 750)
A Brazilian classic executed to perfection. Juicy, tender, and brimming with flavor, the picanha cut (from the sirloin cap) is a beef lover’s dream. Each bite is meaty, well-seasoned, and satisfying without being overly heavy—a true carnivore’s delight.
Hueso y Carne Paella (THB 950)
A masterpiece. This version features rich bone marrow and skirt steak, and the socarrat (that golden, crispy layer at the bottom) is absolute perfection. Deep, savory, and comforting, it’s easily the best paella I’ve had in Phuket. Kipo you nail it!
Fiery Tomatoes (THB 400)
Wood-fired cherry tomatoes burst with flavor, paired with creamy stracciatella cheese and finished with chili crisp for a little heat. Each bite is sweet, tangy, and utterly addictive.
SWEETS FOR THE GLUTTONOUS
Basque Cheesecake (THB 400)
Velvety smooth with a beautifully caramelized top, this Basque cheesecake is the definition of indulgence. The pairing with tangy strawberry kaffir lime ice cream adds a refreshing twist that balances the richness. While I couldn’t fully appreciate it after such a filling meal, it’s a must-try if you have room for dessert.
Magnums (THB 170)
Homemade ice cream bars filled with creamy praline and coated in a crisp chocolate shell. Decadent, indulgent, and dangerously easy to devour.
THE DRINKS
Kipo’s beverage menu is a journey of its own, crafted to perfectly complement the bold flavors of the food. The bar, led by Guillerme Valdivieso, offers a mix of classic and creative concoctions that elevate the dining experience.
Signature cocktails like the zero-waste Thai Maria—a local twist on the Bloody Mary—and their Vermouth selection bring a playful yet refined touch. Whether you’re sipping on a refreshing sangria as the sun sets or exploring their expertly curated wine list, the drinks here feel just as intentional as the food—balanced, innovative, and deeply satisfying.
WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT KIPO
Kipo hits that rare balance of chic, laid-back, and utterly delicious. Whether it’s a romantic date, a boisterous night with your girl gang, or just an excuse to sip cocktails while gazing at the sea, this Mediterranean gem delivers in spades. As for me? I’ll be back for those scallops and paella again—and maybe this time, I’ll save room for an extra dessert. Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine have officially landed in Phuket, and Kipo is leading the charge.
Kipo Restaurant & Bar is a win. Put it on your list—you’ll thank me later.
